What would it take for you to say out loud that you run a handmade business and you make money from it?

Not "I make a few bits". Not "it's just a little thing I do on the side".

I ask because there is a maker I have been working with who says exactly that now, and she did not say it 4 months ago. I am keeping her out of this beyond what I need to make the point, because it is her business and not my advert.

She bought the first version of my Blueprint back when it was still a PDF. Then she did the least glamorous thing anybody ever does, which is work through it slowly and actually finish the boring parts.

Clear photos. Descriptions that said something. Titles written the way somebody would actually search for the thing. All the foundations, done properly, over about 4 months at a steady pace with the rest of her life still going on.

And now the traffic is coming through from two directions at once, some of it out of the Etsy search and some of it off her social, and the first sales have started arriving.

The bit I did not expect

The change in her is not really about the money.

Before, she was frightened she was going to fail. That was sitting underneath everything, and it made every decision jumpy.

Now she has a quiet confidence that it is working. She tells people what she does, and she is proud of it, and she says the money part out loud without dropping her voice.

She is not hoping any more. She knows what she did, so she knows she can do it again.

That is the whole thing, honestly. Not a viral video and not a record month. A woman who stopped bracing.

And I want to be straight about the pace

4 months. Steady. Nothing about the first few weeks of it was exciting, and if she had wanted a different feeling by the following Tuesday she would have quit in week 3 like almost everybody does.

I would rather tell you that here, at the top, than sell you a fortnight and lose you.
